BAROKTHEGREAT / Victory smoke

Following their captivating performance Indigenous that thrilled audiences with its vibrant live rhythms and its uncanny atmosphere, BAROKTHEGREAT is back on the brut stage for this year’s imagetanz festival. Their new work VICTORY SMOKE combines live music with contemporary dance and a scenography of light and shadow. This time the group tackles the iconographically loaded image of hunting and the hunter’s triumph over his prey. What kind of hunting it is – poachers in the jungle, a lion in the steppe or humans hunting for success in today’s meritocracy ‒ remains obscure. Dramatically, the piece centres around the tension of the “victory smoke” ‒ the smoke to celebrate the successful completion of an act ‒ as an all-encompassing image of triumph and victory after hunting. Electric guitar riffs and cymbal beats form the soundtrack of this mythical image in pursuit of the prey that is reflected in the performers’ movements.
BAROKTHEGREAT is a group of artists who live and work in Verona at the intersection of contemporary music and dance. Their focus is on working with the physical and ritual function of music combined with traditional forms of movement and the architecture of spaces as inhabitable objects. www.barokthegreat.tumblr.com
